When You’re Feeling Frazzled – It is December After All

That’s me in the photo above; Allison Zimmer, mom of two, wife and full time marketing exec., feeling cold, tired and in need of something to refresh my spirit not to mention my body.  I  went to The Woodhouse for some R and R choosing the Lavender Dreams Sleep Treatment Massage, Reflexology, and Seaweed Eye Treatment.

November 17th. One week before Thanksgiving. Six weeks until Christmas.

The calm before the storm.

Recognizing that I needed a break from conference calls and dishes and coming up with excuses not to go to the gym if I were going to survive the holidays with my sense of humor intact, I turned to The Woodhouse Spa, that haven of peace, luxury and tranquility.

Because choosing just one service from the The Woodhouse menu is like trying to eat just one potato chip, I enlisted their knowledgeable staff to help me decide how to get the maximum benefit out of the limited time my schedule afforded me. Explaining that I was looking for rest and relaxation, they recommended one of their sleep treatments and suggested I couple it with a reflexology treatment (actually, the staff first asked whether I sleep well and then I think I got kind of shouty and just yelled things like, “Teething Baby!” and “He snores and HE WON’T TURN OVER!”)(I’m lucky they didn’t suggest Valium)(Or at least switching to decaf).

Sitting in the relaxation room sipping my tea, my stresses started to fade away. No conference calls and no one was tugging at my leg- Mom, Mom, Mom.

I chose the Lavender Dreams, an offering which The Woodhouse describes as an exclusive massage experience using wild crafted lavender and purposeful massage techniques to help you unwind, decompress and relax into much needed rest, and which promised I would awake feeling refreshed and renewed.

Considering how shouty I was when this whole process began, it would seem they had their work cut out for them.

To really take my relaxation to the next level, we also added a 25 minute reflexology treatment, something I’ve always wanted to try, as well as a seaweed eye treatment to help hide the effects of all that not sleeping.

Ready for my massage!

Let me start by saying that I absolutely adore massages and that they’re my go-to choice of service every time, but the challenge for me is that I usually come in with so much weight on my shoulders (literally and figuratively) that it takes awhile for me to relax into the experience. The biggest distinction about this massage over the (many, many) others I’ve had was how quickly and easily I slid into that dreamy, relaxed state that I normally associate with the end of the massage (rather than the beginning). Whether it was the lavender or whether it was the method, I can’t say but it seemed to take no time at all for me to rid my head of To Do lists and just ease into the bliss of the experience*.

And now a few words on the wonder and heaven that is reflexology.

Giving my body a thank you by way of my tired feet, amen!

The reflexology foot massage is described as an ancient technique in which the reflex zones of the feet are massaged, inducing deep relaxation to the entire body by releasing the flow of energy. It promises that not only will your feet feel terrific (they did), but that you’ll also have increased energy (well I’ll be damned. It worked!). This felt so wonderful and so restorative after the demands of just an average day, I’ve already planned to go back to give myself some relief from the hustle of holiday cooking and cleaning and shopping.

The day ended with a seaweed eye treatment, a service that is often booked in conjunction with a facial or other service, and which was the perfect way to complement to my day of relaxation – a little bit of beautifying to help me not only feel my best, but look my best as well. While pampering my skin, my aesthetician described the amazing effects of seaweed on the hair and skin. The difference in the mirror was obvious; what you couldn’t see was the effect all these treatments had on my spirit.

Out with my girlfriend later looking and feeling rejuvenated. Look at my eyes :).
