Okay kids, hold on to your hats: I’m about to try and sell you on a Yam smoothie.

Yes, you read that right: first it was apple ice cream, now it’s yam smoothies. And if you’ve been following this column and trying the Best Dish each month, you know that now is the time to climb on board the Yam Express.

Made with sweet potatoes, cinnamon, almond milk, bananas and whey protein powder (optional), the Yamanator tastes less like a protein smoothie and more like a delicious, creamy slice of pumpkin pie.

I stopped into the Empire Fitness to try a Bokwa class (more on that later – in short, it’s the Yamanator of fitness classes) and stayed to refuel with a Yamanator. Creamy and subtly sweet with a delicate vanilla flavor and a hint of warmth from the cinnamon, this was delicious enough to be a treat or dessert, but because Empire Fitness is a kind and benevolent place, it was also good for me.

What more could a girl ask for?

The Yamanator was actually voted best post-workout pick-me-up, and I can see why. While the benefits of exercise may not be enough to get me out of bed and into the gym on a Saturday morning, the Yamanator just might.
