Ramen is picking up momentum in the new York food scene and proprietor Mark Teng has brought this Japanese comfort food to Rochester, NY. Furoshiki is located on Park Ave. in the former Piranha space which has been remodelled to open up the space and expose more of the bar. Teng has owned a series of highly successful restaurants over the years and currently also owns Rochester’s sushi venue, the Plum House on Monroe Ave.  The night I went in, the place was busy on a wintery Tuesday. I was with a group of food bloggers and yelpers. We sampled several of the sides, and the Ramen bowls they’re known for. The space was remodeled and more open than it was previously as Piranha, with a more exposed bar as well. Overall a nice improvement. The service was friendly and attentive.

Many of the sides were the standouts of the night. The kale salad with avocado, crispy sweet potato and wasabi ginger dressing was a wonderful combination. We sampled 5 varieties of wings many not on the menu. Sriracha, Asian Pineapple, Salt and Pepper, and Sweet and Spicy. I like my sauces and they had many to choose from. My favorite was the Asian Pineapple. The fried green beans were surprisingly good, served with a mayo-sriracha dipping sauce. They were crisp and a hit with the whole table.

After all these appetizer, we tried the ramen bowls. I had the house specialty, the pork bon,e with one of the optional spice bombs. It was very flavorful and satisfying on a cold winter night.  The Spice bomb was very hot, so I wish I hadn’t put too much of it in. My mouth was on fire.

Furoshiki has a large beer selection, an array of sakes and cocktails.  Noon-6 is 2 for one beer, wine and sake, and a late night cocktail hour 9-11pm with $3 cocktails, wine, beer and sake.
